Canine Partners for Life (CPL) has been dedicated to training service dogs, home companion dogs, and residential companion dogs for over 20 years. These very special dogs are used to assist individuals who have a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities.
Canine Partners for Life is a leader in the assistance dog industry. An accredited member of Assistance Dogs International (ADI) from its inception, the organization was one of the first service dog organizations in the wolrd to be accredited by ADI.
The total cost to raise, train, place, and provide lifetime support for each CPL dog is estimated to be more than $27,000 per dog. This is why we at the Cochranton Veterinary Hospital have sponsored this wonderful organization since 2005 by providing full veterinary care including wellness exams, vaccinations, dewormer, heartworm prevention, flea and tick prevention, ect. for one of these special dogs every year.
Canine Partners for Life has 40-50 puppies being raised by volunteers at any given time. Puppy homes are volunteers who agree to raise a 7 week old puppy in their home for 12-18 months. The puppys home is responsible for providing the pup with basic obedience training, house manners, and exposure to public environments.
Created in 2002, their prison puppy raising program benefits both CPL and the institutions inmates and staff. Started in 2000 at the Maryland Correctional Institute for Women in Jessup, MD, the program quickly spread to four other facilities in Pennsylvania; SCI Cambridge Springs, SCI Muncy, SCI Smithfield, and SCI Albion. Cochranton Veterinary Hospital sponsors puppies from the SCI Cambridge Springs facility.
Currently, 22 puppies are being raised by the inmates within these facilities. The prison as a whole is a softer environment thanks to the pups. The pups bring smiles to a place that is often hard and cold. Puppies can provide unconditional love and offer no judgement. Inmates experience the feelings of success and fulfillment which come from dedication, hard work, commitment, and love. They learn the lesson of self sacrifice when they return the pups to CPL and the joy which comes from helping someone in need.
